Nursing student presents work on violence against GLBTs
As a Science Without Borders fellow in the United Kingdom (2014-2015), the nursing student Nayla Rodrigues Pereira started a volunteer work at the GLBT foundation in the city of Manchester, developing a scientific research work called “TRANSGENDER PEOPLE EXPERIENCE IN HEALTH CARE SERVICES: A LITERATURE REVIEW”, under the supervision of English professor Angela Cotton.
“Considering that Brazil is the world champion of murders of transgender people, mostly female transvestites and transsexuals, I understand that this population needs more attention and protagonism of civil society and academia,” says the student.
Last March, a first approach of that research was presented as a poster in the 2nd International Conference on GLBT Psychology and Related Fields event in Rio de Janeiro. With the title “TRANSGENDER PEOPLE EXPERIENCES ACCESSING MENTAL HEALTH CARE ABROAD”, the work advised by Professor Michele Mandagará from the Nursing School at UFPel presented the results of a partial survey on transgender people’s experiences accessing mental health services.
